Top ranking female senators have told Muslim women in the country that the idea for establishing an Islamic University is long overdue.

Sen.Joyce Musu Freeman Sumo
Senators Joyce Musu Freeman Sumo and Geraldine Doe-Sheriff said they were awakened by the mammoth growth of the Muslim community nationwide in a very unique way and will not hesitate to carve a university charter for passage by the Legislature.

Both ladies spoke Sunday at a well-attended function of Islamic women held in the auditorium of the Monrovia Vocational Training Center (MVTC).

Senator Sheriff who initiated the discussion said the establishment of said university will in no way create division or discrimination amongst Liberians and such opportunity will serve people of every religious divide.

The ‘Islamic University’ she said will be given the opportunity through Legislative efforts to get subsidy from government as done with other universities across the country.

‘As a senator, I represent everybody, though a Catholic and so I will continue to champion the cause of every Liberian be it social, political, economic or religious background,’ Sen. Sheriff stated.

Muslims themselves have been opting for said establishment for years according to several speakers but the effort of the two Montserrado senators for them ‘Was like a dream being realized.’

The Muslim Women for Peace, Unity and Development is expected to cater to hundreds of Muslims with an intent to give them vocational training and empowerment.

The Montserrado senator gave an initial sum of eighty five thousand Liberian dollars through her ‘Geraldine Doe Sheriff Empowerment Foundation.’
She committed her foundation to remaining supportive in every way towards the advancement of women in Liberia.

  2. If these Senators want an Islamic university good. Just in case they're unaware, we do not need legislation for that. They can find the funding ( not from tax dollars though) to open one. We do not have a Christian public university so tax payers should not fund an Islamic one. Just as the Methodists, Episcopalians, Baptists, Catholics, Lutherans, etc. have opened learning institutions in the country, the Moslems have the same right to do so.

These Senators should be advocating things that will improve the living standards of Liberians thereby justifying the huge salaries and benefits the receive instead of silly ideas that will only cause division.
